In partnership with the Kidz First NICU team, we hosted a graduation party to mark World Prematurity Day. Over 100 families and their toddlers came together over the weekend to celebrate their journeys and reconnect with those who supported them during their time in the Neonatal Unit.
The day was made even more special by the presence of Ata from Middlemore Foundation, his wife Lili, and their daughter Alexis. Now 8 years old, Alexis was once a NICU baby herself. The family spent the day volunteering, sharing their story, and giving back to the unit that played such a vital role in their lives. For the NICU staff, seeing Alexis now as a healthy, thriving child was a powerful reminder of the impact of their work. Alexis, meanwhile, enjoyed connecting with staff and families, bringing smiles to everyone she met, and being a 'celebrity' for the day.
Premature birth, which occurs before 37 weeks of pregnancy, affects around 10% of newborns and often comes with health challenges. Middlemore Hospital’s Neonatal Care Unit admits 1,500 babies annually, making it the busiest in the country.
On the wards, a market day offered families resources and information to support their babies’ development and health. Many families are already looking forward to next year’s gathering to celebrate their little graduates.
We would like to thank the Kidz First Neonatal Unit for their dedication to our families. The impact of their care and support was clear throughout the day, as families shared their gratitude and celebrated together.
