Middlemore Hospital’s Bereavement Care Services has been a cornerstone of support for families during their most challenging moments for 30 years. We recently celebrated this significant milestone with the dedicated team, clinical staff, chaplaincy, funeral directors, and other compassionate individuals who form the community that provides care in times of grief.
In preparation for this celebration, Middlemore Foundation received generous funding from the Akarana Community Trust and New Horizon Community Trust, which allowed for the refreshing of the facilities, including new paint and carpeting. One of the workers involved in the renovations shared a deeply personal connection to the space, having used it in 2023 following the loss of his baby son. He recalled how Bereavement Care Services supported his family by creating lasting memories, including handprints and other keepsakes. His story is just one of many that exemplify the memorable compassion and care the service provides.
During the 30th anniversary event, attendees came together to bless the space, an area that is often described as having a tangible feeling of peace and comfort. As one participant shared, "It’s a feeling. People remember how you made them feel." The blessing helps preserve the wairua (spirit) of the place, ensuring it remains a sanctuary for grieving families.
A highlight of the celebration was the unveiling of a bespoke mural by artist Logan Moffat, who has had a longstanding connection with Bereavement Care Services. The mural, which reflects the many cultures that pass through the doors, offers families a moment of distraction and reflection during their time of loss.
Thank you to the incredible team who dedicate their mahi to bringing comfort to our families.
